Five years ago if someone would have told me that we would move to a very rural location and live off grid, I would not have believed you... I may have even laughed. After living in a big city and putting up with everything that city living entails (huge mortgage, high electricity bills, neighbors way to close, HOA's), we did in fact make the decision to have a simpler life. We now live off grid on 30 acres in the beautiful White Mountains of Arizona. Although its not always easy, it is very rewarding!
We often get strange looks and questions bordering on the rude side when we tell people that we live off grid. For example: you don't have running water or a flushing toilet, do you shower outside, do you do everything by candle light, do you cook over a campfire and my favorite why would you live like that? In case you are wondering the same things, yes we have running water and a flushing toilet. No I don't shower outside or cook over a campfire. In fact our house works just the same as any other house, the only difference is the way that it is powered. Our power comes from the sun! We have all the normal appliances that people on grid have like a refrigerator, dishwasher, washer and dryer, microwave, and evap cooler. The only difference is we don't have a huge power bill, surprise outages or a smart meter.
Although there was a big upfront cost of under $3,000, our system has completely paid for itself in the first two years. I won't lie, it was an adjustment, but it is very gratifying knowing that we are using a renewable resource to power our home.
